  • On the way to Mauna Kea, we were lucky enough to see a pair of Nene Geese. The Nene is Hawaii's state bird. It is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, and although its numbers have made a recovery in recent years, the Nene is still considered an endangered species.

  • One of the giant telescopes at the Mauna Kea visitor center … at 9000 feet. All excursions stop at the visitor for ~45 minutes to allow visitors to adjust to the altitude before continuing on to the summit.

  • We were happy to be above the clouds; what an amazing view!
  • From the Mauna Kea website - Hawaii is Earth's connecting point to the rest of the Universe. The summit of Mauna Kea on the Island of Hawaii hosts the world's largest astronomical observatory, with 13 telescopes operated by astronomers from eleven countries. The combined light-gathering power of the telescopes on Mauna Kea is fifteen times greater than that of the Palomar telescope in California -- for many years the world's largest -- and sixty times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.
